I like spares, so I keep a head net in my sprayskirt pocket all the time. I have a backup bug shirt in my sacrosanct bag.

Consider purchasing a thermacell. They work very well. You can pick them up almost anywere that has a camping or hunting section.

All,
Since I'm coming from Michigan (land of kindler, gentler mosquitos) what seems to be the best chemical (or otherwise) defence against your monster Florida mosquitoes?

In the everglades you need multiple layers of defense.
1. Good bug spray. I use nothing less than 40% Deet.
Once I set up camp I use:
1. Thermacell if the wind is down.
2. Head net during peak buggy hours like dusk and dawn
3. Mosquito netting for shelter.

I kept a salt water mosquito in a dog cage but they do not make good pets because they only last a week or two. Takes longer to bond. They prefer small short hair dog, food....easier to hold down to feed.

I use atleast 98% plus Deet. Yes my mouth will go numb if I wipe it, but atleast Im not getting bit.

I've had good luck with Permithrin spray. Camped at Graveyard with AlexO about three months ago and the no-seeums blackened the sky at dawn and dusk. We sprayed our head nets and hats plus the netting around the zipper to our tents with a little squirt inside the tent. There were a lot of dead little specks on the tent floors and bedrolls, but we were bug-free. A couple of people I know spray their clothing with it before packing for a Glades trip and have had excellent success keeping the little buggers at bay. Skeeters and no-seeums are out in force this year!

I have my OR headnet, 98.11% deet, and have just ordered some Permethrin spray--thanks for the heads-up on that.
I remember my first EC, in '07: I had a head net (my very first), but unknowlingly one that only protected me from mosquitoes. The no-see-ums would fly right through, nibbling on their way.
My second EC, in '08, the late night mosquitoes in the Everglades were so loud I could have sworn it was a helicopter. I remember stopping paddling in the pitch black to actually look around me to check. And they could bite right through a layer of Icebreaker 200. I finally camped that night on Mormon Key, around 0200--I still have the blood stains on the inside my tent...

Yeah, Ben, I seem to remember that last year up at Leilanu State Park(that's Traverse Bay, MI., folks) the skeeters were so thick that they were rockin' my hammock. Don't use an inflatable pad in your hammock as the critters can bite through the hammock and pad. Seriously, error on the side of caution. Home Depot sells a 100% DEET spray. Kiwibird, most feed stores can supply the permethrin concentrate. It has residual benefits so I spray everything here at home, let dry, and pack. The 'glades in August can be formidable. The flying teeth, as Toby puts it, will chase you into the water. AlexO and I experienced not much of a problem a month ago in Florida Bay. The Wilderness Waterway may be entirely different. We have had a very mild winter and the bugs haven't been knocked down. As someone said already, it ain't the gators and pythons you have to worry about, it's the winged bloodletters. Royd
