DeadCat's not leading the derby, and in fact she's not in it at all! Did the EC do DeadCat in?

Aaaaaack - how dare you
!! Actually, I'm just trying to give my fellow Tribers a chance to feel good about themselves....
. And, oh by the way, why don't I see you in the derby...or even signed up for the Okuemfest?!!? Don't you have a wooden kayak...Mr. Stripbuilder...and isn't the Okuemfest a chance to celebrate wooden boats?
Just kidding, but it is nice to be missed and I'd love to be kicking it again during the derby but life dictates.... To be honest, I'm having fun giving FeralCat grief about maxing out his daily workouts..."gotta keep up the family tradition" blah, blah. Not to worry, I will be in full swing when Chief starts the NCC Derby.

I'll be looking forward to seeing you again at the NCC, DC. Sounds like FeralCat now has a wood kayak too. I still might be able to make the Okuemfest.

DeadCat,
I am hoping you can tell me if you are happy with your Eddyline s18 performance during the Everglades Challenge. There is one local to me for sale and I am seriousy considering purchasing it for next year's EC. If you do the EC again, would you use the same kayak or perhaps a different one? Any info would be appreciated. You can also contact me via email duckandsock at cox dot net.
Thanks!

Hello, CH - yes, I love my Eddyline S18 and currently I’ve no plans on changing anytime soon. First, however, I must put in some qualifiers with reference to my lack of experience, no real basis for comparison, and size.
1) I am relatively new to the world of “sit inside” kayaks and therefore my qualifications for recommendations are questionable. My Eddyline S18 s the first one I’ve ever sat in (while on the water) and that was only 16 months ago. I did demo some others that same day but, perhaps a bit rashly, just decided to go with the S18. Saying all that, I love my kayak, it is extremely durable and forgiving and FeralCat has a hard time getting me to paddle anything else.
2) It has not always been a love affair...I’ve fallen out of love (to the point of questioning if I should even attempt the NCC last year) and then back into love with it. Within the first month, I perfected the 1st half of an Eskimo roll (and became a whiz at self-rescue) and it took a while for me to gain basic skills. For a beginner, it is a great kayak to grow into...but I’m truly not sure if a skilled, veteran kayaker would feel the same about it. Guess I’ll have to wait a couple more years to be able to give that kind of opinion.
3) Size matters. I am 5’5” and 135 pounds and I rattle around in the cockpit. It has a high deck and PLENTY of room; I added some thigh pads and use thigh risers so I can get a better fit. For the other end of the spectrum, FeralCat is 6’3” and 200 pounds and can barely get in and out of my S18 (he hates it!) and the deck height at the point where his feet reach is too low for his size 14 feet.
4) Finally, it is made of a material called Carbonlite which really is tough, forgiving and easy to maintain. Bottom line, I love my S18 and plan on giving her another spin through the Everglades.
Hope this helps, DeadCat

Thanks for the info DeadCat. By the time I decided that the s18 would work for me, it was sold. Pretty upset since it was $700 for a 2007 that was in nice shape.

CH, not sure what part of the world you are in but there's a kayak shop in Destin, FL that still had an S18 as of a month or so ago. I know that Marlice would love to sell it; you may want to give her a call and see if she can work a deal for you. The following are her contact info:

Thanks DeadCat. I'm actually in Niceville, FL just across the bridge from Marlice's shop. I went there the other day and saw the s18, and the price...I'll have to stick to what I can find used on craigslist :(
Are you located down here as well? I wouldn't think too many people would know Marlice unless they were familiar with the area.

CH, I have a office in Ft Walton and am down here often (im actualy here now for a week). Did you get a chance to talk with Marlice as of 3 months ago she was offering it up for 2K.
Cheers, FeralCat

CH, we're located up in Virginia but I come down that way occassionally with FeralCat. We stopped at Marlice's Kayak Experience in March, 2012 (the same time we were following all the EC2012 activities) and had a good morning trying out several of her kayaks. All of the shops in our area only provided the opportunity to "try out" their kayaks on the shop floor or, at best, wait for their once a year "demo day." Marlice has a nice set up where you can pop in the water behind her shop and get a good feel for whatever interests you. She's had that S18 in there for a while and now that it is a discontinued model, its value for her as a demo kayak should have less stock. Talk with her and keep checking, she may be convinced to move it for a lower price.
Good luck - Deadcat

Feralcat,
I've been in Boston but I get back tonight (Thur). If you're still in town (FWB) I'd love to get together for a few minutes and talk kayaks/everglades challenge with you. Email me if you're up for that. Duckandsock at cox . Net
