   FYI Response from Garmin as to future of 78 GPSMap series:
   As of right now there aren't any immediate plans to replace the GPSMAP 78 Series with an "88" series or something similar as a replacement. The GPSMAP 86, with optional inReach integration is likely the replacement going forward for the aging 78 Series. Unfortunately I can't speak to any yet-to-be-announced product being released in the near future.

   West Marine has the 78sc on sale every year around this time.

   I pulled the trigger on one this year, as my decrepid old handheld GPS bit the dust last year and my Garmin watch does not last long enough for an EC.
