My Mary Lynne is planning on being at all but Flamingo. She is upset that the early weather reports are predicting a fast race us in class 5. She has a full list of friends and family to visit on the way to the finish. I'm beginning to think that is more important than me, my boat and the race... woman!

Look forward to meeting Mary Lynne...see you in Flamingo! Sue

May I point toward one interesting rule's interpretation.
It was born quite a while ago, albeit it was held under covers by knowing parties. Khe-khe. As a true competitor you must not accept any help from relatives while it is absolutely legal to get a help from a stranger, such as... your competitor's relative! Do you see where I'm driving? Yep. Just choose kindess looking one. It is true that after a pass or two there are no strangers left in the crowd, we all become relatives. However there are opportunities for the first time around!
Good luck to all! Especially for the land crew. Their job is tougther.Posted 7 years ago # -
.....hugs and kisses are allowed :)

Setting the record straight on getting help and family and friends. I'm not really sure what one of the previous posts was talking about.
If you are combining a family vacation with your adventure, we encourage family and/or friends to meet and greet you at all the checkpoints. Hugs, kisses, photo ops are absolutely OK and the more the merrier. You can walk to a local cafe and have breakfast, lunch or dinner. Basically you can do anything you would normally do as a WaterTriber at that checkpoint location if you did not have someone greet you.
They cannot give you food, shelter, water, or expedition support. They cannot meet you at a bridge along the way to give you supplies. They cannot meet you at any location except official checkpoints.
No you cannot get resupplied by a competitor's relative.
Remember that this is an unsupported, expedition-style adventure race.
We do grant some leeway for catastrophic events. If you have a major breakdown, the Race Manager can clear you to receive help to fix something. Typically this fix is going to take a long time and that by itself is your penalty. You must get prior clearance for this so call before you get any help. This does not happen very often.
Let me give an example of normal friend and family meetings. During the EC2011 I had some friends in an RV along with my wife heading down to Key Largo. The met me at Flamingo. There was meeting and greeting going on. I did not sleep in their RV. Instead I pitched my tent next to the RV and slept there. I did not take any food or support from them. We did walk over to the cafe at Flamingo for breakfast. All this is totally within the rules.
