   Looking for a compact handheld VHF, to live in my PFD. I  currently own a West Marine VHF75 and a Standard Horizon Hx 290. Both are to bulky for my PFD. Plus, the WM 75 has a rigid antena. It kind of stays in the way.

    Has any one tried a Cobra VHF 125? If so, how did it hold up ? I am also looking at the ICOM 88, but it is pricey. Any other true compact VHFs, I should consider? 

   One of my current VHFs, will be my primary working VHF.  The one in the pocket will be used, only if seperated from my kayak.

   I just got a SH HX300 to replace a bulky Icom M36. Fits well in my NRS C Vest. Inexpensive too, about $100.

   The Cobra VHF 125 is only a 3 watt transmitter. Other handhelds are 5 or 6 watts.

   I have the M88 and it is going strong after 10 years (with one battery replacement).  That said, while the radio is compact, and the radio body is protected from immersion, the battery compartment is not. Unless bagged or rinsed frequently the battery terminals will corrode. 

   I have better things to do with my fresh water and time (during a race/expedition) than to rinse my radio often, so I bag mine, although it does make the radio much bulkier.  For a short EC it would probably be no problem, but I have seen M88's ruined on month-long expeditions where they were not rinsed / bagged.

   We have had good luck with the Standad Horizon radios. I am front seat in a Hobie Tandem Island so getting and staying wet in developing weather is normal.
   The Standard Horizon HX 150 is on sale several places factory new ( gps store and Hodges's marine) for less than $80 with free shipping at least one place and a factory rebate of $ 20. It's a 5/1 watt and has dual watch . The only big disadvantage is the antenna while flexible is still pretty rigid. It will depend on where and how your radio pocket is located. At this price this radio is approximating the cost of some batteries to only!
