So unclear about the rules. Can someone come and paddle with a competitor in the UFC for a hundred miles or so....... Is that too close to being support or prearrranged?

That is a chief question, but from what I understand, moral support without physical support is OK but a hundred miles starts sounding like support since there would be camping involved.
They might bring cold beer and that would clearly be cheating unless I was invited.
I agree. Someone traveling with you can provide various means of support such as watching your boat while you sleep to let you sleep more soundly, fix meals while you break camp, etc, which is a decided advantage over someone traveling solo. The same would be said for a support person meeting you at every place you stopped. I think it's OK for competitors to form teams as necessary, and I think it's OK to have friends in kayaks say hello as you pass by on the course, but otherwise, having someone outside the competition join you for a long distance, whom you can draft, share strategy, etc, ease your burden of being alone, is an unfair advantage, IMO. That said, it would be Chief's call.
Greg
Yeah, thats how I see it too.
OK another UFC rule interpretation. I know we have to carry all our stuff but can we have a backup to our backups in our restock kit. I.e. could I have a spare greenland paddle in case I have an incident with one of my wings? Could I switch a paddle out at Fort Cinch using a wood paddle on the rivers?

Cwolfe, in the past many challengers have experienced gear failure with an update on the forum of their situation. Lurkers and other WaterTribers come to the unplanned assistance along the route, or can find a way to get parts shipped in next day if significant repairs are needed to continue the UFC journey (Pelican comes to mind again and again).
If you need advice on where to find supplies or resources along the route due to unforeseen circumstances along the way, then post a question on the forum or facebook. You may be surprised how close you are to resources along the entire route.
Since I worked Sunday and then 24 hours from Tuesday-Wednesday I am comping today and using EarthNC and Google Maps to chart a run from Key Largo up to the St Marys...Maybe, just Maybe...
That would be awesome Brad. I hope you can jump into the maelstrom.
Cwolfe
Brad, I like the way you are thinking!
IMO .... if you are going to tag along and offer beer and assistance to one, ya gotta do it for all!
Meatloaf
OK, I tried to be nice. But if you guys keep pushing me, I'm going to have to crack down and never let anyone get assistance when stuff breaks or gets stolen or whatever.
No, you can't have prearranged paddlers with you for hundreds of miles unless they happen to be in the same event.
You cannot have a support person following along and meeting you every time you stop. We have already had one WaterTriber be banned for life for doing that. They can meet you at official checkpoints or stage points. Other than that each occurance has to be cleared with a CP Captain or Race Manager for actual major damage or major gear loss like everything being stolen.
I'm real close to cracking down. Don't test me.
Just to be clear...I wouldn't be a rabbit, but possibly a UFC COMPETITOR.
It will be either the Marathon des Sables, or the UFC for me. Since I have not completed a marathon, I naturally thought 5.5 marathons through the Morroccan desert in one week is a great next bucket list item.
So is the UFC though.
Right now, I just want to bend my knee and regain strength after surgery.
Oh hell, I didn't even understand the original reference to a rabbit. We shoot and eat rabbits in MO. When a meeting goes off agenda, we "shoot the rabbit" to get back on track.
Yeah Scareman, I want to see you IN the UFC! Rabbits? Rabbits! We don't need no stinkin' rabbits! :)
Joe
Chief,
I am surprised by the tone of your response. I suspect you misunderstood the thread. To my reading a question was asked. Question answered and some non controversial light hearted discussion was had. Scareman let us know he was contemplating UFC and fellow watertribers applauded the idea.....then you got seemingly upset.. I will chalk this up to a lost in translation phenomenon.
Cwolfe
Sorry about that. Sometimes I forget to put the LOL or :) after something I say tongue-in-cheek. If we were talking face-to-face, you'd see me smiling as I made the joke. Good thing I'm not a standup comedian :)
I might have misinterpreted the comments. I've been under a lot of stress lately planning my route for the MNVC2015. 39 Portages! This course will eat you up and spit you out. Also, there were a couple or real questions about support in other threads and I probably jumbled it all together.
I also hope Scareman can make the Ultimate Florida. This year is going to be special because we have some of the WaterTribers who finished the very first Ultimate in 2006 coming back in. If there was ever a year to jump in and cross something off your bucket list, this is it.
I'm strongly considering throwing my hat in the ring too... In the process of putting together a paddling/walking training schedule, and am talking with my wife about it....
When I first requested entrance into the UF under the old qualification rules, Chief gave me this piece of advice. Commit to it as soon as possible. I did and I wholeheartedly agree. It does take a lot of planning and preparation. I think you will be better off the sooner you decide, Archangel and Scareman!
