Talking About Adventure In Small Boats

Looks like stump pass hates sailboats.
Best to take a kayak:)
but it looks deep.
deep in the channel.... not so beyond the sunken boat!
This whole Stump Pass topic has taken on a life of its own. Folks. It's deep in the channel and no so deep outside the Chanel. Stay in the channel.
If conditions wont allow you to navigate the ( unmarked, but clear in most photos ) channel I agree, move on.
Excitable Boy and I sailed through there a month or so ago and were surprised how deep and well marked it was. ( the charts show no marks, we saw two fixed and two buoys)
I am not a Watertribe veteran, but have entered many passes along the West coast of Fl in mostly larger keel boats. You have to trust your instruments and your gut. Stump Pass actually is pretty deep ( as pointed out by Just Another Sailor)
anybody got the scoop? Pretty poor seamanship to let her sink right in the channel. The sand bar can't be more than 50 feet away. Insurance?
My insurance is my 6" draft and 160 LB hull weight!

Posted on another west coast sailing forum. This is what the owner stated:
Stump pass got me!! Ran aground on the west side of pass, sw winds pushed me into the jetty, ripped the rudder off, history from there..... We are all very, very sad, we didn't sleep last night. Depending on weather, Sea Tow is going to try and salvage her, but I think it is a total loss..... Any ideas, never been in this position before.... Ufhhhhhh
The best news is, Vic and I are O.K. and will live to sail another day...
I've been through Stump Pass recently and I don't recall seeing a jetty. Sounds like the Skipper is a little confused about what caused the mishap. He doesn't say if his engine quit which could have caused something like this to happen. I assume he wasn't sailing into the pass with that size boat. I hope he cleans up the mess soon. Probably a fuel spill and lots of other debris getting scattered.
doubt they were sailing as all sails are neatly rolled/furled, etc. Once the rudder was gone it was probably pretty quick so that would explain the location. Plus no steerage either.
They jetty he is referring to is probably the sand bar on the low tide. Some big boats can go in and out of that pass easily if they are somewhat familiar with it.
I remember swimming across this pass at night many times as a teen. Had a few drinks of courage before we did it but none the less.
If he referred to a "Jetty" he may have thought he was at Venice Inlet.
