Some of you may have upgraded to the Spot 2. Can you keep your original spot as a back-up or will you be charged another $150 dollars for the priviledge having two?
The Best Buy deal mentioned is very tempting. KiwiBird, as you mentioned getting a Spot 2 , can you link their tracking capabilities if one fails?

You only get to use one at a time unless you pay for service on the second device.
I just finished the upgrade process, and I found it very simple... it took me less than 5 minutes.

Yep. Only one at a time only. BUT, if you take your old SPOT with you as a spare, you can have someone at home log in to your SPOT account and very quickly make the changeover to your spare SPOT, if you lose your first SPOT.

PS: make sure the person at home has the ENS and Athentification Codes (the two sets of numbers inside your SPOT) for all your SPOTS.

Thanks Macatawa and KiwiBird. That sounds like a good plan as I carry backups for just about everything with the exception of an extra brain...

Kiwi Bird: What is the difference between the silver spot 2 and the normal spot 2?

Color...

Correct. Absolutely nothing else. I think this may be why they're on sale--orange outsells silver 10:1.
Have to admit: am loving the new SPOT 2--so much easier to control. Interesting (because it's smaller) that it takes three AAAs and not two AAs like the old SPOT.

PS: and those lithium AAAs are included with the SPOT. Nice touch.

I just went to Best Buy online and the silver Spot 2 came up as $59.99 When I clicked to buy it, it then said it was only $9.99 Thats right. $9.99. I bought it for store pickup for a total online bill of $10.49 (after tax). I'll see what happens. I'm suppose to pick it up in a about a week from my local store. Apparently Best Buy is dumping their inventory of the silver Spot 2s.

$9.99 must have been a On-Line Error. It is $59.99 on the Best Buy web site. Still a great price. Too late for me to switch horses 5 minutes before the race. I guess it is the old orange mare that I have to depend on. She needs a few extra pushes to get her going...

Yes, I paid $59.99 yesterday when the Best Buyer Customer Service person at the local store ordered me a new one after I returned the one I had just bought less than a fortnight ago. Why did I return it? Because it refused to reboot, after booting it up, successfully sending a test message, running it an hour, during which time it generated 4 tracking signals, then powering it down. Called SPOT tech support who suggested holding down both top (power) and left buttons simultaneously, also trying brand new lithiums "in case unit was old stock" (original batteries had 2017 expiration date!). Neither worked, so back it went. By the way, the tech indicated that 1) I'm not the only one to have had this problem, and 2) it is important to use lithiums because of their much better ability to meet heavy draw when sending a signal -- apparently units have even been damaged by using non-lithium batteries. Anyway, the lower price was a pleasant surprise.

My Spot 2 rang up for $ 34.99 at Best Buy and I even questioned the clerk about the discrepancy! Nice surprise... I haven't activated it yet, but , after reading these last posts, I'll transfer over from my spot 1 today and make sure this silver one is not defective.
Thanks for the update.

Best Buy doesn't have them in stock around here. Tried to get West Marine to match their price but they wouldn't do it
