Here is a story of a rescue of the crew of a small catamaran off Cedar Key (from West Coast Trailer Sailor Squadron). WaterTribe equipment list would make sure that they weren't in the wate so long.

My wife and I rescued three "mariners" last summer on the Catawba river. The boat was over loaded and capsized. All three of them had their cell phones in the pockets of their jeans. Nothing was tied down on the boat, so Jen and I had to clean up the yard sale after we towed them to shore. The "Captain" actually placed his car keys on the floor of the boat and had to use our cell phone to call for a ride when we got him to shore.

If the info in this story is correct this Steve Snyder guy can haul ass in a 12' boat. Sunset on the 3rd was at 5:53. This gives him a 4.5 mph average if he got to South Manitou by dark. Winds were calm, but the temps were around 35, water temps around 35-BuRRRRR This guy has more than luck working on his side!!! He did beat our record for "earliest crossing to South Manitou" by over two months, but I think he gets the Weenie Award for the return trip!
The Ranger at Sleeping Bear Dunes was right on the money and I know of a great 17' boat that would have been perfect for this adventure.
