Talking About Adventure In Small Boats

In the full Everglades Challenge we require a full camping load. In fact, that is required for any of our events that include "Challenge" in the name. This is because these are intended to be "expedition-style" adventure races. If you were going on a month long expedition, you'd probably carry a tent, sleeping bag, cooking stove, etc. Some push the limits and go a bit too lite in my view. It is possible to meet all of the required camping load and meet the spirit of the rules with less than 20 pounds of camping equipment. My camping load is 17.5 pounds. That does not include boat equipment like your lifejacket, PLB, VHF, SPOT, paddels/oars, lights, paddling clothes, etc.
But if the title of the race includes "Ultra Marathon" we allow a lot of latitude in meeting the camping requirements. In other words, you can go into Bivvy mode. Even if you do not plan to stop until you get to the finish at Cape Haze Marina, you do have to carry something just incase. But it can be minimal. For a stove, you can't beat the smallest Jet Boil with one can of fuel. But some carry nothing but one of those tiny folding stoves with a solid fuel nugget and a cup. Instead of a tent, some might choose a bivvy bag and tarp. If you already have a dry suit as part of your paddling clothes, you can bivvy in that along with a space blanket.
BTW, a good bivvy bag and a tarp weighs more than a Moment DW from TarpTent and the TarpTent will do a better job.
Certainly used my bivvy gear last year in the Okome fest ultra marathon. It would have been nice to have mosquito protection.
I'm doing the UM2020 and plan on basing my kit on Chief's comments above regarding latitude in camping requirements for UM. Jet Boil with fuel, some cookable food, tarp, dry suit, space blanket. That stuff in addition to the other required items, SPOT, PLB, etc. should get me through the inspection process?
