I would try a solid piece not a tube. I like stainless or fiberglass. Good Luck...Pete
This was solid, but fatigued where I had drilled a hole for a through-bold to hold in place. Will try some other way to keep the stretchers centered. Fiberglass would flex too much on my leg drive, so stainless it is, thanks!
I just realized that the bolt between the foot rest went thru the aluminum tube. Which weakened it and after a while it broke.
I'm not sure if this will work but you might consider using a cable clamp (not a tie wrap) That is used to fasten wire to the wall with a screw would hold the foot brace in place and not weaken the shaft. Look at Home Depot in the elctrical section. below is a link of what a cable clamp looks like:
Seems like a good idea. You cannot see it in the photo, but that bolt is not the one - there is a tube on the backside that the rod slides into, and without something to secure it, the whole assembly can slide right and left. In the meantime I picked up a threaded rod and nuts/washers, will try that first. I will use one washer/nut each side of the stretchers to keep those from sliding on the rod, then use a second set outside the mounting brackets (instead of the cotter pins I was using).
