Talking About Adventure In Small Boats
Stay safe everyone
No kidding...
Ok, time to load the surfboards just in case of that personal weather hold., Roger
Macatawa, that "LIVING COLOR" forecast isn't helping! I think everyone will be a CP1 by lunch with the wind behind us. Of course, the return trip up Core Sound will be interesting. Maybe we should plan a party in Beaufort for Friday evening and head back on Saturday morning?
ps... Macatawa, could you post a link to your weather site.
Thanks,
Yakmandu
So, with the wind direction as it is forecast, does anyone have an opinion on taking the cut vs going around the horn at the beginning of the course?
Fishpoo, I am seriously considering it. It was in the back of my mind anyway just because I have never gone that way before. Only adds a couple of miles.
Get on Google Earth and look at the slew right behind the start line. If we can come in the back way (accepted by Chief, 2 years ago), why can't we go out the back way. The rule says: The only route requirements are that the first part of the race be run counter-clockwise, through the Harlowe Canal, with a stop at the checkpoint on Taylor’s Creek in Beaufort.
If anyone chooses to go east down to Thorofare Cut and then make the westward route through Long Bay and then take the Old Canal to Turnagain Bay and out onto Neuse River, they have broken no rules! It adds 10 nautical miles to the course and a much larger beach/mud to cross. With the wind predictions, I should be able to sand sail across with a double reef and my sea anchor out.
Think about it. I can't see tearing up equipment fighting to get off the beach and into the waves. Maybe, just maybe, this will be one of those occasions where assistance will be allowed to cross the beach from north to south. It is the FIRST NCPC!
See you on the Beach.

If you scroll all the way to the bottom, there is a map that shows other wind observation points in the area too.
This has the potential to be a wild ride, (at least for the 1st third of the NC challenge). Getting off the beach should be fun, might be swimming the boat out past the surf line then do a wet entry. Now I have to pack an extra towel, full skirt and a long sleeve shirt for the start of this.
Cheers, FeralCat, does this forecast bring back memories of the Sarasota Bay ride?

My bright ideas always seem to get shot down, but why couldn't you wait for the start, and then pick up your boat and walk over to the boat ramp?
Hope the Father Daughter V15 Team has double reef points!!!! Can't wait to see how they did, but it has to be better than Squiddly and I did in 2011 on his V15. The V15 is fast but can wear you out!
NOAA's not too bad of a forecast for the area:
Fri: NE winds 20 to 25 kt. Waves 2 to 3 ft. A slight chance of showers in the morning.
Fri Night: NE winds 20 to 25 kt. Waves 2 to 3 ft.
Sat: NE winds 20 to 25 kt. Waves 2 to 4 ft.
Sun: N winds 15 to 20 kt...diminishing to 10 to 15 kt. Waves 2 to 3 ft...subsiding to 1 to 2 ft.
We should be able to get our boats off the beach in 2-3'!

From Commander's tropical weather report (no active storms right now):
Some more showers noted around that weak low between Bermuda and Florida as well. There will be some fairly strong NE flow off the SE US extending off to the NE in the western Atlantic due to high pressure to the N and lower pressure to the S.
Have a great adventure and safe passage to all watertribers this weekend. Wish we were there.
