In light of the some of the discord that's come across this forum in the past few days, let me quote the last couple of paragraphs of my story.
I don’t think I would not have made it at all but for the many selfless acts of kindness by fellow Watertribe competitors. I cannot express how profoundly grateful I am to so many who in ways large and small who contributed to my success: Ridgrunner and Greybeard, Dragonslayer, Lugnut and Karank, and Lightnin’, just to name a few. The next morning, Chief awarded me a little paddle. It’s not the shark’s tooth that EC finishers receive and I still covet, but it’s a surprisingly meaningful trophy that will remind not so much what Bandaloop and I achieved, but rather it will remind me of the people along the way selflessly gave of themselves to make it possible.
There’s no reason to do a Watertribe challenge. Anyone could jump in a boat and sail the same course by themselves and not have deal with rules, the inspections, or the extra expense of doing it the Watertribe way. But the magic of Watertribe isn’t the race course, it’s the community. It’s the people, the nutters who do this every year, that make it much more than the sum of its parts. I guess I’m now one of those same ‘nutters’ I’d read about so many years ago. And I’m very proud and humbled to be one of them.
