I just saw on the tracking page that Jarhead is heading southwest away from land. He has activated his help button! Anyone know anything?

I just saw that too. He initiated the Help at 7:36. Last Help bleep from his SPOT was 8:36. Last SPOT was 8:47. Hope we hear something soon.

On the tracker I see the OK at 8:47. I can't see any past tracking history. I don't know what he is sailing or see any history, and if sailing I would want to stay off the coast a little bit. Does anyone know his shore contact? Or anyone getting the full history from his Spot? The link to his Spot site will show all his history and snail trail, including current messages.

Jarhead is solo on his Sea Pearl. Probably the most experienced Watertriber out there. He sent off help messages for 45 minutes, than ok at 8:47. Then nothing.

The roster says he is sailing a Sea Pearl 21, it is a nice boat. In theory you only hit the OK when you start stop or change course. Looking at the weather he probaly was sailing off the coast and then hit the OK when gybing back to the southeast. Hopefully he is okay and not needing help, being out at sea in the dark is not hte time you want to have problems.

Hopefully that OK means he received help or fixed what was amiss and that he is ok. I don't know if SPOT has to be reset or turned off and on again to get rid of the auto Help pings. Hope his shore contact will post something once he gets in touch with them. Meantime, fingers crossed.

I have seen his boat before, hopefully he is ok now. The one way communitcation sucks, when wondering if he needs help.

I called the CG. They updated me a bit ago that they were able to raise him on the VHF. They couldn't make out much other than the word "Mayday". They are sending a chopper to his location.

Thank you Gary. Is Sheila down there? I called home but she didn't answer.
Do you have her cell number?

It must be a medical issue. They've taken Bill to Miami...he does not live there.

From Jarhead: “Paula, just checking in—-too late to call. I’m fine but cold, only have wet clothes. Pls tell Chief, details tomorrow. The trouble was the boat was not controllable and was safest hove to. I planned to just ride it out but I got very seasick bailing and cold, etc and thought it was going over any minute. I realized that PFD or not, I wouldn’t last long in those seas off of North Cape.”

Glad to hear JarHead safe and sound...wOo hOo!!

Great decision!
An experienced Sea Pearl sailor with 100's of miles and some years on the Maine Coast capsized his Sea Pearl a few years ago off one of the islands a few years back. It went turtle really fast, and was impossible to right in even in relatively smooth seas. Indeed he had problems hanging onto the hull. I'd never thought about this issue on a leeboard boat. Fortunately it was a clear day and he was spotted by a passing lobsterboat.

Wonderful outcome to an extreme situation, Well done, Bill!

Thanks to all for concern and help, especially Mishigama. I’m fine in the Shula Hotei in Miami Lakes, and my clothes are almost dry. The short story is the conditions were worse than I had ever experienced, though in the daytime I was doing fine. In the pitch black I was having more excitement than I really wanted out of the EC, and my goal changed from get to Flamingo to get to Middle Cape, where it looked like I could get a little protection from a NW wind. One of many wild jibes knocked my last GPS into the water in the boat. I got out my phone with iNavix on it and that was great but by then the boat was uncontrollable in the sense that I could not sail a course. It was best behaved when hove to, so I thought I’ll just ride this out, no way I’m calling the Coast Guard until I go over. In a little while between barfings and bailing l strapped on my ditch bag, got out my PBS , and put my thumb on the SOS button. I don’t know how long it was before I thought that all my actions so far were pretty smart, but now not to push the button was stupid. I pushed it; whether the helicopter came because of that or because of Gary’s call I don’t know.
I will write up some lessons learned got this forum later.
Again, thanks to many. Coast Guard rescue, general
