Is there tent space on Indian key or is it a hammock situation. How many spaces? We’re doing a EC preview in January (Goodland to Key Largo via nightmare) and it looks like we will have 6 tents. Would we be better off using picnic key? I know people have mentioned staying on Indian key but not sure how many and whether tent or hammock.

I've never set foot on Picnic but have spied it many times times. It has a longer beach near the "potty" than Indian key, probably more sites.
If going from Goodland there are spots prior to the park like Panther Hog and Lulu. First come first serve. If you get there early afternoon you should be good.
Hammock attach points are usually OK, tents more so.
Just an option

Indian Key is in the park and I don't believe it is an approved campsite. Bustedrudder suggested good sites, or go farther south and camp at Jewel Key, Rabbit Key or Pavillion Key, all of which require permits.

Lulu is a great spot and plenty of room for tents and hammocks.
