As I was sanding and priming the bird this weekend I thought how nice it would have been to have a new boat ( and maybe cheaper). So that made me wonder the age of some of the boats in the race. Mine is a 1974, so 38 years old. Note sure if the term Keylar had been invented yet..........ha
How old is yours?

The boat I raced last year was 31 years old. This year's boat was built in 2007 and 2008. I've got a 40 year old sailboat sitting in the side yard, but it will never do a WT event.

My Core Sound 20 was started in 2007 and finished in time for the 2008 Everglades Challenge. This is its third EC.

Maggie is Sea Pearl #338 and was built in 1990, she has the distinction of being the last centerboard version of that design. We have started 6 EC's and finished 5. Dave

I started building my XCR after watching the start of the 2009 Everglades Challenge (great inspiration!) I finished it later that year in September. The sailing rig was added during the summer of 2010.

My modified (heh heh) International Lightning is a '69 -- an early fiberglass version. Though admittedly she had been heavily updated by a previous owner, who retrofitted more modern flotation-compartment thwarts, deck etc, and installed a watertight bulkhead/stiffener forward of the mast. She's an oldie-but-goodie.

Donkeyhotey, a 1969! wow, thats great. Look forward to seeing it on the beach. Roy

Thanks, Wade and Roy. Yes, makes me chuckle that she was already afloat when I bought my first used Lightning 42 years ago...
Amazing what paint and polish will do. She was pretty new to me last March, and she'd been gussied up by the seller. I better get some more on her or she'll look more her age this time (maybe not the prod and traps, but they're new).

2007... so I guess 5 years old. Hull #48 Interesting to follow the changes Norseboat has made to the boat since they started making them. Now better benches, water ballasting and a shorter lower segment of the mast are standard, as is going boomless.

I'm not really sure how old our boat is... maybe 10-15 years old. We are in a Necky Tofino tandem kayak (dubbed "The Blue Marlin") that Pelican generously offered to loan us for the EC. The boat has a bit of a history. It seems that Chief owned it at one time. There was another owner between Chief and Pelican. It's a great kayak -- very stable and seaworthy.
So should I be thrilled that two WaterTribe veterans have used this boat, or worried because neither chose to keep using it? Hmmm... I think I'll choose the former.

Slider is only 4 years old, but they've been hard years, mostly spent in the water. She's going to look like one of those after-meth pictures, if I don't get a new coat of paint on the decks and cockpits. I probably ought to sand down the cedar center deck and oil it up, but I probably won't get to it. Maybe I can talk Nancy into it. She cares more about appearances than I do, a fact that becomes abundantly clear when you look at her and then look at me.
Oh well. We can't all be beautiful, I guess. If the little boat holds together until the Keys, I'll be happy.

Our Sailbird, Clarity, is 40 years old! We won't be entering this year (I have a neatly severed ACL due to horizontal motorcycling) but we'll be at Checkpoint Chokoloskee doing checkpointy stuff. It's a bummer to not be entered, and doubly so since another Sailbird will be on the beach, but we'll be back next year... hopefully with a nice corrosion resistant knee brace!

Wish you were joining us Mike, we could have our own class :) Roy

Roy, we gave it an attempt last year and had quite the adventure. I believe we had the first Sailbird ever in a Challenge. We WILL be back next year! Clarity isn't a stock bird... she's rigged a bit more conservatively, but she's still pretty quick, and with a very low center of gravity. I'll see you at Choko, and perhaps we can discuss strategy after the Challenge is over (I've become quite skilled at running aground and can share many tips in that regard).

Will you be at the start too?
Posted 3 months ago # -
Not sure yet.... it depends a lot on scheduling, where our son will be staying (I may have to take him to Cudjoe Key and then backtrack to Choko), and how fast the first boat to Choko is expected to be, etc. But I'd LIKE to be. If not, I'll show up Friday for a bit.

We are sailing a Prindle 19 built in 1986. It appears to have been in storage , replaced all most everything , this is the first Challenge for her. I hope for many more .

He built my 3 sails. Good guy. Took him out for a wild ride on the bird. He spoke very highly of you. See you at the beach.
