Folks,
My trusty Garmin 78sc doesn't seem to be able to find satellites any more. Fresh batteries do no good. Is it dead or is there a way to reboot it?

Folks,

Contact Garmin. Even if it's out of warranty, the will frequently "repair" i.e. replace it with a refurb for very little money. I got a new 76csx a few years ago this way for about $50, IIRC.
Try this before sending in.
if you do send in let us know what it cost and if reliable. When yoy get "new" unit leave on for a couple of batteries worth and play with it. They seem to like to send "intermittent" items back into the field.

I tried the reset without any luck. I guess I'll have to call Garmin.
Thanks
Have you received notice from Garmin about updates?
I received : https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=JDIjpBiRT251Yi2vwokMi8
West Marine will be selling 78sc for $179 starting 11/28 for a few days.
Price drop may be to the introduction of the brand-spanking-new GPSMap 86sc ! ($449).
There is also a GPSMap 86sci model that has Inreach tracking capability ($649.00).
I don’t see any reviews yet.
Both are IPX7 so I assume the new unit leaks as badly as the old one so I will sit this one out and let you do the beta tesing at $500 a pop
Look forward to seeing one
Bigger screen would be nice (but only slightly larger at 3” diagonal).
86sc has a “user replaceable” internal lithium battery. Might reduce leakage but need to recharge / carry a brick.
I currently like the option to swap batteries on my 78sc and battery life is excellent with lithiums. The 86sc advertises only 40 hours battery life, 200 hours in “Expedition Mode” (low power mode with screen shutoff, no Bluetooth, etc).
The Inreach compatible version advertises 35 hours of life for sending 10 minute tracking data.
For the people who wanted a 78sc mated to an Inreach, with tracking and 2-way satellite texting, this. might be the bomb ( once Watertribe Tracker supports Inreach ).
