Just for fun what was your top speed and what kind of boat? I was solo on a Hobie TI. I hit 11.8 on the gps some time going down the coast until stump pass. I went through the breakers about 4 and surfed on in hitting 17 knots! What a ride.....
For something light....your top speed?

Class 1 with FEKS, 12.1 knots.

10.4 MPH surfing a fully loaded Kruger Dreamcatcher as I left Tampa Bay and entered the ICW.

16.7 knots on an Astus trimaran (gray with red hulls). Not sure where that happened... pretty sure we were smiling to big and too busy to look at the GPS when it happened.

I hit 8.8 knots in Tampa Bay. I was in total control as I was doubled reefed.

KB, 12 with a Feks says something. I'm sure you recall 2012 - I did 9.x with a PAS going backwards in the ICW on Sunday. But that was a lot more wind!

8.9 mph in Tampa Bay almost to the ICW. 17' Perception Sea Lion with a 1 m Falcon Sail, fully loaded with gear/food/water for the entire challenge.

12.6 on our CS 20

55 knots, upwind!! (All sails, sticks and gear stowed with boat firmly strapped to its trailer, cruising down Interstate 10.)

Class 4, 16.5' Saroca monohull - My handheld GPS reported a max speed of 9.1 kts however after downloading the track to my computer, there appeared to be only one 8 kt "spike" which was so brief that it couldn't have been more than one brief surf down a wave front. I regularly exceeded 6.5 kts under single reef surfing across Tampa Bay and then settled into a pretty steady 5 kts down the ICW and across Tampa Bay. Speeds dropped to 2.5-3 kts in the afternoon as winds dropped and veered East before freshening again in the early evening. Averaged about 4 kts for the whole 14 hr run down to CP1.

Downloading my GPS track showed a 123 knot spike in Sarasota Bay, and another 42 knot spike in Lemon Bay! Yee ha!

Quick question, most if not all, times, my Etrex GPS set to trip display set at display Max Speed, will display lets say at 8.5knots, but then when I download into Home Port and look at properties, the fastest speed display is someting like 8.3 or 8.4... just minor delta... Anyone else ever has this issue... or can explain this...

Gadget Girl here (.org version of the site won't let me log in while the .com version of the website will ...what gives?)
Anyway, I had a top speed was 13.2 kts a couple of times going down the coast on my Weta. It was a fast, fun ride with lots of double-digit speeds.

Kept up with SquirrelyPaddles crossing the bay in my ScupperPro Ocean Kayak w/Falcon Sail kit. We both hit 8.9mph max with an average of 7mph+.....

Interesting thread!
I've found that you have to be very careful with the max speed function in Garmin devices. Slight errors in position can yield large errors in speed. It wouldn't surprise me that there are slightly different algorithms for max speed on the dashboard than are used in the track summary. It would be nice if Garmin provided an uncertainty in the measurement (retired test engineer, what can I say?). Since they don't, I would suggest that when the satellite signals are clean, max speed is good to +/- 0.3 mph. I've skied at over 1000 mph with bad satellite signals (uphill!!).
Gadget girl, 13 mph is great fun. But you can get that Weta to higher speeds that that, no? SewSew, would you care to post your max speed in Sissor?
KiwiBird, you are by far the fastest kayaker I've ever had the pleasure to meet!

That would be 13.2 knots, not mph. But yes, the Weta can definitely go faster. I had a reef in the main, so I was not as powered up as I could have been. I knew I needed the reef for the wind in Tampa Bay. I thought about shaking out the reef later, but then some sustained puffs would roll through periodically, so I figured it would be less fatiguing to continue on with the reef.

Class 1 Kruger Sea Wind with FEKS. Full EC load.
9MPH almost out of Tampa Bay into the ICW.

We were in a TI and we hit 11.6 MPH in Tampa Bay

9.6 knots, with a reefed sail. In keeping with GadgetGirl's reasoning, I left the reef in until mid-afternoon when I was hugging the coast to minimize surprises.

9.8 Knots crossing Tampa Bay in our Current Designs Libra XT tandem kayak.

14 kts in a Tanzer 16 with the spinnaker up before I had some good practice righting the boat.

Looks like the folks posting here mostly had stuff stuck up in the wind to help them along. I'm curious about what speeds the pure paddlers hit. I find that with a favorable wind and sea, surfing along at 6-7 knots isn't real hard if you pay attention. But there were some folks there with faster hardware and better engines than I have.

I saw 10.8 on the ICW after cp1. The drawback was with all the spray I couldn't see poop. With a twelve foot beam in a narrow channel. I had to reef so I didn't Tbone a channel marker. DWM.

Sheesh -- Compared to this fleet fleet, I think my heavy cruiser Hare which hit max perhaps 9-10 kts in fast cruise mode this trip was more akin to a tortoise in more ways than one. But based on the parable of the Tortoise and the Hare, maybe she makes it to KL yet... Better late than never.

Let's hope so, Per! At any rate, it sounds to me like your boat was going pretty fast from where you left it at anchor. Now if you had a SPOT tracking device on the boat . . .

Right you are, BO. I did have....until I took it with me for "safekeeping". See my long post this afternoon in this thread:
