Thanks for sharing. Looks cool and might have some utility, but it simply depends on who programmed it whether it is gold or garbage. A good coach and video sessions would probably be better. For example, in the video, while it is great to be reminded of a "late exit", the kayaker is shown punching downward (tomahawk chop -- bad form) and the advice shown on the screen is "don't cross the centerline of the kayak with your pushing hand". That advise is very obsolete and old school. If using a wing your pushing hand will, or should, cross the centerline on every stroke. That said, looks like it has potential, but as a programmer myself, it all depends on the software and the knowledge of who programmed it.

Received the response below.
I've decided to purchase one of these to demo it, and use for my forward stroke clinics, after chatting with the owner and Oscar Chalupsky. Oscar wasn't sure if the "live coach" would be particularly helpful to me, but he's a big fan of the data collected: "tells you how far each blade is in the water and how far you boat goes with each stroke and how long each stroke in a simple IPhone display".Will be happy to post my impressions.
Hi Greg
I saw your post at watertribe.org.
My name is Guy Aharon and I am the CEO of Motionize. We invested the last 4.5 years to bring the ultimate and most advanced tool for kayaks. Our most important mission is to help our user to improve their performance and enjoy more. We are sure that bringing technology and more fun into kayaking would make the community bigger and all of us kayaking would enjoy from that.
The system helps kayaker, amateurs and professionals to learn in real time - on the water - how to be more efficient and paddle better.
We don't believe here is only on good technique of how to paddle. We are not indicating what is the correct technique but advising the user how to improve his performance based on a biomechanics studies and his gear: paddle type, paddle length, feathering, kayak type, length, width, model etc... We are building an optimal performance for the user and competing between the actual performance and the optimal one. Where we see no correlation we provide visual and audio feedback in real time of how to improve.
The biomechanics study is based on many type of paddling techniques and paddlers and millions of strokes.
Motionize Paddle brings you qualified information about your paddling but it does not replace the coach. It helps the user to practice and be motivated. The user has a recommended option to send the session report to his coach. It is the first ever system that brings modern tool to communicate between instructor and his trainees.Posted 4 years ago # -

Jim,
Yes, I also have mixed feelings about using my iPhone and usually prefer to have it in my dayhatch. The case that you see on the motionize demo fits only an iPhone 6. For other phones you provide your own waterproof case and they provide include a RAM mount. If possible, I'll have mine in a lifeproof case and an AquaPak if it fits. Will see.
I see that the app also works with the Garmin Fenix watch, but I don't have one and prefer a larger screen.
You can download the motionize app free of charge, to your phone, to get an idea of what setup options are available.

Wonder if they plan on developing one for rowers?
Posted 4 years ago # -
JC,
I ordered a unit today and asked the question. Their response was:
We are planning to extend Motionize to SUP and Rowing in the future. For now our main focus is on two sided blades.
Motionize provided me with a 5% discount code, "gregstamer.com", for students and anyone else, that is good until May 31, 2016.
