I got the first fish for the derby today. I got a 20 inch seatrout and a 13 inch flounder for 33 points. Are you guys going to let me win?

Are we having fish for The Feast in Key Largo??????

Why doesn't the Gheenoe qualify? Just leave the motor at home.
Also, I probably won't be able to get out on the water more than once a week either. So what? A really good fisherman should be able to double my points or more in just one outing.

Its probably a little bigger Gheenoe than you are use to seeing. Motor is not removable. The Kruger Cruiser will be ready soon. Just got new carbon fiber masts & BSD rigging. Can't wait to get it out there and do some sailing.

I think if I hooked this fish, it might get the points for hauling me in.

Reminds me of crossing Tampa Bay at the start of EC2012. If you kayakers only knew what I see as I row backwards!

OK, since you don't believe that I can catch a couple of fish, here are the photos. You will notice that I don't have my token in the picture. Also, to comply with the 321fish way of doing things the mouth of the fish should be at zero and the tail should be pinched which also makes the fish longer. We have it the other way around and didn't pinch the tail. Oh well, still learning. I already said in a previous post that there would be plenty of leeway for the derby since it is for learning and not actual competition. Also, I can't actually win any of the derbies anyway.
I went out with Neil Taylor a local kayak fishing guide to learn how to fish from a kayak. I only caught the two fish, but Neil caught a lot more. The bite was very slow but we ended up with two seatrout over the 20 inch limit. I caught one right at 20 and Neil caught several over 20. You're allowed to keep one seatrout over 20 inches per person so the rest were released. In addition to the two over the 20 inch limit, we caught a few in the "slot" and maxed out the cooler. Both Neil and I caught a small flounder but still over the minimum size of 12 inches.
Why should the tail be pinched? If a law enforcement officer stops you to measure your fish, they will pinch the tail to making it longer - it is standard practice. If you measure your fish at 20 inches like mine but without pinching the tail, you will be given a ticket because the length will get longer by 1/8 to 1/4 inch or so. I forgot to pinch the tail for the photo but Neil and I knew that it was actually over the 20 inch slot size. Since I forgot to do it, I only took 20 points instead of 20.25 or so.
Do my points count if I went out with a guide? Yes, in the derby you can go with a guide if you want. This is for practice and learning so go for it. In the EC, if you want to hire a guide to go with you as crew, be my guest. But you can't use a guide at Key Largo unless they were in the EC. If you are already a guide yourself like one of you mentioned in a post, that is perfectly fine with me.
Now, go out and catch some bigger fish!
