Great post! Thanks for sharing... seems like a typical first Watertribe experience. Complete with good preparation and discovered flaws in preparation, physical torment and emotional exhaustion.
I too, had a crazy Sarasota Bay ride, a good support team and an early exit after one too many close encounters/boundaries stretched. I hope to compete again in the EC, but with changes in the way I prepare, train and anticipate the challenges of the adventure.
Be proud of what you accomplished: I am psyched for you. Congrats!

There is also NC and next year, at least you tried and will gain from your experience.

Jim,
Don't give up doing it again yet. I am planning on it for 2014. You should be there as well. I was feeling pretty much the same way when I DNFed in Fort Myers in 2011. I got a bit shook up and had to call it quits. I know what I did wrong. Probably no....actually the exact same spot you stoped at and then unwisely chose to move on from was where I also should have stayed the night and not pushed on late into the most unfamilar leg of the trip. By the way a TI fits under that bridge just fine. I went under at the very western end. Let me know when you are ready to do some local trips.

Hey Jim,
Good post!
Enjoyed watching your progress from afar... you surprised me, moving with amazing speed, passing the majority of the field and staying mostly in the leading quarter of the field for most of the duration of your challenge. It takes great courage and wiseness to know when stop, though, and I think you did as you probably should have.
It was fun and good experience joining you on your traininng/testing/shakedown runs... hope we find reasons to do more.
Take Care,
Don

Glad to have you out on the water with the rest of us... I retired as well, due to rudder issues, but in no way do I consider it a failure: the only failure is in not trying.
As far as ziploc bags go, we tested some 2 years ago with duplicate equipment, and found them to be just a little less watertight than a screen door on a submarine. THey were so bad, I posted a warning review on Amazon, and boy, did I tick off a few people!

Sorry for your DNF, but you gave it a good shot.
