Feathercraft has shut down their kayak manufacturing business. They indicate they will open a new webpage in the fall selling some parts, but it is unclear if this includes their rudder systems.
This is unfortunate for those of us who have Feathercraft rudders. They go way back, I have seen several Sawyer Loons from the 80's that were equipped with Feathercraft rudder systems. These rudders, coupled with Yakima sliding foot controls, are pretty bombproof. I care because my Clipper Sea 1 has a this system. It came with a small K-1 blade and I opted for a larger K-2 blade which performed much better for me on this large expedition canoe, especially when under sail. A fellow paddler with a Sea 1 was ready to try a K-2 blade and now we can't find one anywhere.
I'm just not sure about the alternatives from Smart Track or SeaLect. Especially as it relates to replacing a Feathercraft without major boat modifications. Guess I should just wait and see what happens.
Maybe we should start a long drawn-out discussion about the merits of a foil rudder versus a flat aluminum plate rudder ;)
