Talking About Adventure In Small Boats
From TideTraveller:
Microtom [and Bacon] passing Doctors Pass.
From RunsWithBeer at CP2:
Sailor King and Real DM have perfected the mud walk.
Getting it done. These guys were just about the most rested and relaxed of our guests so far.
2021 Everglades Challenge Overall Winner Awards go to Chaos and SewSew. Congratulations!
From Moondance:
Jim and Will made it to Checkpoint 1 about 2am this morning, officially completing the Florida Ultra Marathon, about 60 miles. They have opted to spend the rest of the week at a more leisurely pace doing some camping, paddling, and assisting their friend Jaime Smythe (pictured in the middle) with navigation, since he doesn't have their years of experience on this course. Not exactly the original plan, but it's much more relaxed!
From Katamount:
Looks like Andy, Mary and Gil (OneEyeJake, Calypso, and GypsyPaddler) went through the culvert! No doubt dinner at the Isle of Capri Fish House was involved
From RunsWithBeer at CP2:
Boats coming, going and staying. CP 2 is the place to be.
DC, CCock and Staright camping here
Stumbling Thunder and Justanothersailor doing a dine and dash
PrivateHam and whale doing a quick turn and burn.
From Santiago at CP3:
AndyMan and NateDog arriving at CP3 around 6:45, just as we are were losing daylight. Getting into the marina's skinny entrance has been a challenge with this north wind.
Thanks for the updates Macatawa. Saw some stuff I haven’t seen yet! Good job.
Ditto. Thanks, everyone, for the updates.
Ouch! What happened to Kozman?
Too dark for good pictures, but IronBob and TheJuice are in at CP2
From CP2:
Iron Bob and the Juice are catching some zzzzz's (top photo)
and Skinny Genes (Jeans?) Has arrived at CP2. The Thistle was built in 1945!
Update from MicroTom and Bacon (pics by Bacon)
2021 Watertribe Everglades Challenge. Crazy long day today. Wind was blowing like crazy when we got up. We finally launched around 8:30. First half of the day was a sleigh ride down the coast. In the afternoon it was lighter and we added a reef and hook a reef out too many times to count. We ducked inside at Gordon Pass in Naples and took a back country route around Marco and past Goodland. 11 PM and we are finally stopped for the night.
Second boat in, TwoBeers and MoreSaileSaid:
Morsailesed and TwoBeers arrived a few minutes after 4pm yesterday. Faithful shore contact waiting!
Third boat to the finish:
Gamera and Gremlin finish at 6:30pm yesterday. Great time!
Some other overnight updates...
From AndyMan and NateDog:
What a great ride! Pushing 15 knots somewhere off Cape Sabel with AndyMan in our beautiful Hans Geissler design.
Apparently Tripod Key was the place to be last night (From MisterC):
Monday Morning. Tripod Key. Probably the highest concentration of EC and UFC finishers in Watertribe history. My guess is over 50 Shark and Aligator teeth have adorned their colective salty necks: MicroTom, Bacon, Calypso, OneEyedJake, GypsyPaddler, MZEE and Clewless.
Screen grab from MicroTom's video review of their spot:
From CP2:
JustKeepPaddling leaving CP2. The mud dictates your plan.
and...
Secret men’s business here.
Update from Calypso:
Dolphins hunting off our campsite at Tripod this morning. If you look close in the one photo, you can see the dolphin throwing itself on the beach to knock fish into the mud. Very cold camping last night but we are fine. Planning our run on the wilderness waterway.
And one more from Tripod Key... this from GypsyPaddler:
We want to go to the Nightmare before Key Largo. With OneEyedJake, Calypso and me!
2021 Everglades Challenge Roster Update
Here is my, Scareman's, 5 AM Monday morning March 8th rundown of the WaterTribers Down the 300-mile Everglades Challenge Course.
Here is the best info I can obtain using the WaterTribe Mapper and RaceOwl as Day 2 is coming to a close on the 7 AM start with Plan B launches from Ft Desoto on Saturday March 6th.
Also note that some people launched from Ft Desoto at 7 AM on Sat Mar 6th, and some launched as far South at Gasparilla Bridge near that same time through the "Plan B" start due to the storm forecast and high winds forecasted for the start of the 2021 Everglades Challenge.
Relative positions may have changed by the time this is published because it takes time to run through the field and get the data on each participant.
CP2 (Chokoloksee) to CP3 (Flamingo) mileage varies. Mileage from CP2 to CP3 is 63 miles via the outside out Rabbit Key Pass around Cape Sable. If you take the outside from CP2 and cut-in through Ponce DeLeon Bay down the Shark River to Whitewater Bay, then your mileage could be 59 miles. If you go the entire Wilderness Waterway this is a 99-mile route on the inside through mangroves and limited camping options if you cannot sleep on your vessel. Chickees are sleeping platforms with a 10’ x 10’ covered roof and port-a-pottie located throughout Everglades National Park. There are also ground sites in the Park, but with the tide swinging 4’ on the outside and a few feet o the inside – ground sites can be a challenge – especially Graveyard Creek.
CP3 is about 35 miles from the finish at Key Largo, but that depends on your vessel, the wind, and the water levels in Florida Bay as to how many miles you really travel!!! TheNorthern route takes you through Crocodile Dragover. The Southern route takes you through Tin Can and Twisty Mile. If you are in a sailboat, then you may just find your way South to the ICW and work up the ICW to the finish with much longer mileage to Key Largo.

General update from PaddleDancer:
As of right now there are 43 boats heading to the finish in Key Largo. Big drop out day at CP2 due to predicted weather. Challengers making prudent decisions.
