12:50PM
I(Wingnut) just heard from Lugnut - he feels that this is the roughest start he's experienced to date. He's double reefed and they are at the northern most bridge in Sarasota Bay. Theres a lot of wind and rough sailing. The wind and currents are wreaking havoc with under bridge transport but they have devised a work around it all. The weather is cool/comfortable while sailing, but pretty hot when stopped. They plan to get through the bridge and will probably get some lunch and then proceed southward. He says they've traveled a total of 16 miles which equates to 10 on course due to the conditions. There are other challengers stalled at the bridge for the same reasons. I hope it keeps the local motor traffic to a minimum(okay, one can always hope!).

11:03 PM they are about a half mile south of the second Sarasota bridge and they are anchored behind a spoil island to get some rest and wait out the storm. They are not dropping out however they are not expecting to make it to Placida by the deadline as the weather will not permit them to sail. They plan to wait out the storm and then get back underway. Today was a long, tough day with the wind on their noses the entire time.

Lugnut intends to leave anchor under mizzen only and the weather will dictate if/when the main will go up. The forecast calls for high winds, gusts to gale force so their progress depends on the conditions they encounter. If its too dangerous, they'll anchor and wait out the weather. They both got some well deserved rest and they're in good spirits. They report seeing alot of the kayakers in the intercoastal ww heading south.

At CP1 5:13PM. They plan to stay the night at CP1 and venture out tomorrow when the wind should be more reasonable. They are both in good spirits and feeling the effects of a lot of wind in a short amount of time.

I heard from Lugnut at 10:08AM that they almost flipped going through one of the inlets(Grand Pass maybe). He said something about the incoming tide, choppy waves and a gust of wind all at the same time catching up with them. Luckily they both reacted quickly and remain dry.
I got a second message at 2:43PM that they've had a great run down San Carlos Bay and that they are at the base of Pine Island Sound where they're now "bobbin-n-bakin" as the wind has gone very light and is oscillating. They hope to make it to the open gulf in about an hour or so.
WN
They plan to continue on to CP2 and both are in great spirits aside from the heat.

Wish them fairwinds from us, thanks for the updates!

They've got a lot of experience on that boat, and the boat itself is experienced-- go, boys!-- Wade

Lugnut says they are out of San Carlos Bay since about 3:15PM and the winds have been flukey, changing speed and direction, but they are traveling between 2-5 knots. If conditions stay the same, he feels they are about 10 hours away from Cape Romano. They plan to keep going to CP2. Both are in good spirits and enjoying the calmer conditions, contemplating dinner.

10:18PM
Lugnut says they are off Gordon Pass in Naples. He estimates he should make it to Cape Romano between 1-2 if conditions remain the same. They are averaging around 4 knots per hour as the wind continues to be flukey. The weather is cool but pleasant. Both are still in good spirits and they plan to keep sailing through the night(onward to CP2).

Lugnut and Karank are at CP2. They've been battling strong winds again and were almost knocked over at one point. Very strong winds about. They are planning to get a couple hours rest and then continue on to CP3. More to follow when they get better reception.

8:02AM
I haven't talked to Lugnut yet today, but at 6:24AM they were closing in on CP3. Reception in the everglades can be spotty and I'm attributing the lack of communication to that. I've received "OK" messages throughout the night so I know they've been sailing all night as planned.

Due to rough weather, the guys are going to clean up the boat, themselves, eat, and get some much needed rest at CP3. They say that conditions are really too rough to return to the water at this point. Given the forecasts, they'll have to beat into the wind to make it to the finish and they are hoping for more moderate wind conditions to do so. They are both in good spirits and in spite of the rough weather, each of them were able to get some sleep during the night while the other manned the helm.

I forgot to say in the previous post that they'll be going on to CP4/finish after they do all the above.

Way to go Gary and John! You guys are a real inspiration.

These two are great sailors and are making good decisions. It's crazy out on the bay right now (20-25, gusting to 30). The guy from Tow Boat US who is going to bring out boat to Flamingo says i will be 10-25 on Friday. SewSew was knocked down four miles from the finish (and rescuers messed up some of his equipment and he thinks he's out).
Keep going boys (!) and make class 4 proud! You're now 3rd! (can't believe it's Wednesday night and only two are in.).

3/8/12 The guys got underway at 7:30AM. Lugnut called in around 9:15 to say that they got a good nights rest and conditions today were improved over yesterday(they aren't taking any spray). They are taking the long way around due to the wind direction.

Praying for the wind to come south just a few more degrees so Lugnut and Karank can lay the course to Largo...

Per the tracking map, they continue to make steady progress towards the finish. Lugnut said it would be a long trip.

9:09PM
Lugnut and Karank have passed Cross Bank which is the last place they could have gotten hung up. They are 7 miles from the finish, as the crow flies, but they are curious if whomever is manning the checkpoint could get the room key for Karank's room since they estimate that it will be after midnight before they get there and would like to have access to the room he rented. Sailing up the intercoastal has been very wet, short choppy waves and a lot of spray. At least they are in the final leg of the journey.
