Talking About Adventure In Small Boats

MM, Thanks for this! As a rower only, with no sail assist, I'd really be interested in a Human Powered only class....no way to parse out such info "in your spare time"? Any idea why such a class does not seem to exist?
Class 2 is human power only, kayaks and canoes with no sail assist. There isn't really a row-row only class, since as far as I know, BeastOarman is the only one up to now who has been crazy enough to try. He's in Class 2. I don't know why you are in Class 4.
Is this like your boat?
Doooobrd has a similar boat, but propelled with a Mirage drive that's been in Class 4 for several challenges. He's in the UFC this year, also in Class 4.
The class thing is kind of arbitrary though. You'll be able to look around at the start and figure out who is racing in similar boats as you and who will mentally mark as your main competitors. Whether or not you want to talk smack with them before the race is entirely up to you. :)
MM, When going through the various classifications, Class 2 was for kayaks. I'm a rowboat, so I figured only class 4 fit. However, it makes more sense to be in Class 2 for me. I suspect when these classifications were set up no one considered a rowboat? Oh, what to do...?!
MM, yes, the above photo is a RowCruiser (designed by Colin Angus), the exact same design as mine (only difference is a change in hatch design). I was unaware that anyone had desined a RowCruiser with a Mirage drive. Mine is oar only. And lots of Ibuprofen.
JC: my suggestion is to discuss it with Chief. Whatever he says, them's the rules. But it's not like we're racing for money. You know who you're racing against.
By the way, the spreadsheet does not allow you to make any edits. If you'd like to download your own copy, from the menu select "File" and "Download As" and you can save a copy to your local hard drive in one of many different formats.
Julian, you should be in Class 2 if you are not using a sail IMO. I rowed an Alden Ocean 18 in Class 1 because I had a sail, this year am rowing a custom mod in class 2 without one.
Julian, Doooobrd's is a Paul Gartside design, IIRC. Pictures I've seen look nice.
Say it aint so. No KiwiBird on the roster for this year?
Does Chief read these posts? You've convinced me that I should investigate getting moved to Class 2. I'm more than happy to throw down with the Kayakers!
JC, just e-mail him with the explianation / request.
Karank, Did so!
MM, the Chief has moved me into Class 2. Hello human-powered mates (as well as SUP's, of course)!

I guess I'm only one dumb enough to paddle a sup this year....
I have nothing against row boats, but they are difficult to put into our classes. Depending on how they are rigged they can go in virtually all classes. Anyone with a row boat can contact me to discuss how their boat is rigged and which class to enter in.
I would be happy to establish an expedition rowing class or a special designation within an existing class if we get a minimum of 10 boats rigged the same way. Note that I want expedition type rowing boats like the ones we have this year if there is going to be a special class.
Thanks, Chief! We're trying to get rowboats the respect they deserve! We tried to enter the Yukon Quest with a rowboat, but they judged that a rowboat is not "traditional" enough. So we ran the course anyway in a rowboat but not as official entrants. And this year I see the Yukon Quest folks have decided that SUPS can be with the kayaks and canoes--guess they think SUPS are more traditional Yukon River craft than a rowboat...
