Talking About Adventure In Small Boats
TwinSpirit's new ride.
Pretty boat! The reefing points would look out of place on a recreational boat, but look perfect for a watertribe event competitor. Nice job! DWM
Thanks for posting that picture Roger. I really need to figure out how to do that.

Looks great! Is that a Jem Watercraft Northwind? A Hobie rudder?
Tidetraveller
What a beauty! The way I tear up boats that could only be mounted above the mantle, if my house was big enough for it to fit. Really nice! I hope to see it at NCPC.
Scott
Me likey. High-speed lugging!

Hi,
A little about my Class 3 entry for the NCPC. It is a Northwind plans from JEM. The rudder is from a late model Hobie AI , Steering by feet. I am not sure how to do it just yet but I will have another way to control the rudder.
The sail is a custom Polysail 25 sq.ft. the mast is 8 ft long douglas fir. I also have but not installed in this picture a 30 sq.ft balanced lug light weight for calm weather. The bow will also have a 1 sq m. PAS made out of cubin fiber. I have yet to fly both at the same time.
The bow of the Northwind is open , The rear is closed off with a bulkhead and has a hatch that is accessed from the cockpit. The combing opening has been shortened in lenght and the forward lip height increased and canted forward.
The akas are two sections 4 ft long installed in a carbon fiber tube running through the boat also the mast in inserted in a carbon fiber tube in front of the aka tube all glassed in. The amas are made out of 1/2 inch ply surrounded with foam then glassed ,they are designed to be plaining amas a take off of an airplane float. they are attached to the akas to be allowed to pivot this is done by attaching them to a torque tube that runs inside the aka. In test the ama can rotate 45 degrees up and down for a total of 90 degrees.
So far it has been tested but only in winds of 10 knots gusting to 15. (you know that won't happen in a Water Tribe event) I will contine to test and derby , and fix what breaks.
Any coments or sugestions are more than welcome you all have a lot of knowledge.

I love your new try, re your ruder, have you considerd puting a push pull tiller on it to compliment the pedals?extend one side of the rudder head out to about 8 inches and yousing a shwkel to join the tiller to it , having sm sort of clamp or lashing at the couckpit,
Ts, great looking boat! Why a PAS for the bow? A self tacking FEKs might work better, of course you can look at the Kuvia sail with Jib minus the lee boards ( I have one that I can sell you a considerable savings). The PAS is a good sail but you might have some issues going into the wind with all the other stuff you will be working with.
Cheers, FeralCat
You need to position a mount for your GoPro (or other waterproof video camera) and take some videos while you are on your derby practice sessions and then post to youtube. hint hint hint.
re camera mounts, iv just falen in love with the ram mount system, im going to make up a mounting plate for my folder today, thay also have suction cup mounts , iv got a cupel Im going to youse on glass kayaks, dont know if thay will stick well to a striper? thay dont work om roto molded kayaks, iv just reseaved sume ars, camers screws and screw on bace plates to mount , ther like a small tow ball that the arms lock into , well worth exploring if your in the market for a new mount !
Oh, I like the look of that! Very nice. Just did 13 miles of paddle/sailing in my new (new to me) class 3 boat. Class 3 is..... interesting!
I like the hat holder - steamed wood then laminated and glued in a mold? I presume this will be your dash board?
Beautiful boat Christine!
Will you be single blading now?
FEKS FeksFeks
Sorry about that ,But I got a picture up,
Feks , I like the idea of a push pull tube and will look into that.
Feral Cat, I used the PAS sail because that is what I had. I also have a smaller .6 meter sail that looks like a FEKS and might try it out.
Cleanslate, On the picture above I mount a Go Pro were the flash light is mounted, all done with RAM mounts. I do want a mount behind as you do I think it adds more to the movie.
Scareman Hi!!! The dash board is not laminated (I wish I had that time) it is peaced together and then just rounded off. Yes I have fallen in love with a ZRE paddle for the time being but will carry a greenland stick for back up.
This past weekend I was able to get it upside down by pulling one of the Amas off and removing the sail , I was pleased to know I could get it righted and reinstall the Ama then climb back in.Thanks Dawn.
I do have a question , What cordage or cable are those that are using the Hobie AI's. On my rudder I am using what is stock for a AI . I am just not sure how long it will last. No Problems yet just wanting to make sure I have the best I can use.
Twinspirit
If you mean for the rudder controle lines to your flapers , I youse spectra with a poliester outer sheath 2.5mm I have notised that a lot of new kayaks moving through my loft have singal braded dynema , very few have steel cabel enymore.
have a look at Solway Dory web site at ther ruder setups
TwinSpirit - Wow, what a beautiful boat!!
I have been thinking of making new amas as well and would love more info on your build. The BOSS ones I got with the boat are good but have a bit of drag and I worry about on suddenly loosing air. I was going to go longer and wave piercing but that may not work. Could you post pics of construction.

The Hobie ti uses 1mm or 100 pound spectra. I couldn't find a source for 1mm and replaced it with 3mm or 1000 pound spectra. I think it's brand dynema or something.
