I'm preparing to build a decked canoe, a B&B Birder 2. It can and will be paddled as a single or double. The seats in the plans seem bulky and perhaps inappropriate for a boat which may do an EC. What are some other options? Do I need a fixed back or is a back band prefered? Is height adjustment a plus? How much abuse can I expect the bottom to taken given reasonable care? Not unexpectedly, it will likely carry a sail on a mast. I have no experience in this arena but have examined many boats. Some accomodation will be made in the build but I suspect some modifications will take place with some butt time. Wish me luck and thanks in advance. Dave

Don't believe there is such a thing as a perfect seat, but when I purchased my Pygmy Osprey HD many years back, I removed the old seat and back band which, in total was intolerably uncomfortable for me and, replaced with a Redfish seat - http://www.redfishkayak.com/seats.htm Still enjoying the boat and the comfort of the seating.
Good luck

Like Grant said there's no such thing as a perfect seat, however, there are seats that can be comfortable for you. That's why I carve my own seats out of closed cell mini foam. I carve it, sit in it, shape it some more, sit in it again and again till my posterior likes it. My back bands are stripbult and covered with close cell foam. JC

Hey Dave. As far as the bottom all the Iron Men with wooden boats I paddle with in the cold country use graphfite on the bottom for duriabilty.
If you want a solo look at JEM boat plans for the north wind in either stitch or strip build. Kinda looks familiar to me right down to the measurements.
Everett Crozier builds a sweet lite tractor seat out of carbon fiber. I have spent many hundreds of miles in one.
