Without a single challenge complete I can not help but want to build a hull to replace the AI but still use the aka's, sail, and amas from the AI. I really like the finger mullet design but want to make it low profile with a reverse bow. This is my dream EC boat. Well minus a few hundred feet.

If I could mate the center hull of this boat
with a paddleboard attach the bow of the mega yacht and throw in a pilot house I may just have my dream EC boat. Don't get me wrong I love the AI but it lacks some comfort and protection from the elements. Plus how could you not love the reverse bow. For some reason it just calls to me. Anyone else have a design they would love to put together?

My Theresa of course! She won't be the supper fast stiletto that a tumblehome hull is (Wavepiercer is what I would name that ship) bit she will still have decent speed and comfort. I've been contemplating a expedition trimaran for two years now, and she's finally coming together

Something like this:

SOS has designed a version that uses TI parts and should be pretty fast (he can cut it out on the B&B machine). A partially built one was for sale on this forum by Sundance, but I couldn't find it this morning.
And somebody was selling JollyRoger's boat (same idea, holds the class 3 solo record because it uses blow-up amas). Plenty of time before EC 2016.

Thanks for the mention Doug. Here is the link if anyone wants to see the 2013 Expedition Canoe or the 2014 TriRaid.

I do like SOS designs and hope that he does more. It may be time to start thinking about another build and a colabration with him. As said....there is plenty of time.
ShakyRudder would you be using pre 2015 AI? I was out in some heavy stuff yesterday 17-29mph with gusts to 45, with the 2015AI with a dodger and it seems to be much improved and it does have the reversed bows. Though it worth mentioning since the amas are so much larger.

I decided that I would regret it too much if I didn't finish the build of the SOS designed boat. With my current work situation I only get to spend about 20 minutes a week on it but it will be a great boat and building is like therapy.

SD, My wife Dawn "DawnwiththeWind" thanks you! MB can we see Theresa? TUP, good one! And Lastly before I crawl back into work,.... Finger Mullet is Great!...except for her first year where I went to put my hands on her at the start and then again at the finish and drew back fingers full of fiberglass fibers! (and I say that with the upmost respect) ...but yes, I should not have touched her but I could not help myself1!!!

JR, I am writing a blog and will be posting it soon. But in the mean time...
This is when I first got her. She had no name and she needed work
The September run. Simple proof of concept and a successfull attempt to light the fires of adventure in the one who will be joining me next EC
Canoe for scale. My better half and I have strippered her down and will soon be painting, framinging, foaming, glassing, cabininzing, and re rigging her. (Thats my 18 foot Lincoln sitting in her)
And as we sail her. Time line has that in June... I will be making her new outriggers and a folding spar system for the outriggers...
I dream of sailing her almost every night. And day by day she becomes more of a reality. I can't wait!!!

Ha Ha, I was so full of fiberglass at the start I didn't really notice it getting worse during the race. The residual sharp edges did rack up a number of small wounds. That was a major underestimate of time it would take build a boat on my part and most likely my last from scratch build. I wouldn't trade the experiance for anything and the tweaks that get added from year to year really just build confidence in the original concept. This was a steep learning curve, but proved learning about boats never loses it fun. DWM

Jollyroger I will be using the old version AI. I have looked at the fancy new one's but have to reduce the fleet before getting anything new. I don't know how but I have found myself with a little over a hundred feet of boat all together. I have boat problems I guess. I am curious to hear how the new AI does in a heavy sea. The bow diving and constant water in the face the old boat gives me is a pain after a few hours. I love the AI but wish I could add about 8 inches of freeboard to the bow. The rest of the boat is great.

I have to say that of all the boat I have seen compete in the EC the homemade ones are the best. This boat was in one year but I never really found out how it did. Very neat looking. Hope they don't mind that I post these photos.
This one also got my attention.
This is similar to what I want to build. A sit on top reverse bow version with a small pilot house enclosure and a slim stern about the thickness of two paddleboards.
I was hoping hobie would come out with a conversion kit like they did for the later model AI's.

You are not alone:

The problem is that we as WaterTribe only seem to encourage eachother to buy more boats... not much of a support group...

Oh well the photos did not come across. Similar to Mr west system's tri he used this year is the direction I am heading I think.

Macatawa that scares me but I think I am too far gone to get any worse. Just when I thought this was a support group for boat hoarders. ha ha

SR the first photo is the PuddleCat Adventure design and it was my first year attempting the EC in 2011. I took an oar to an eye and dropped out before CP1 for a pupil that went wide open and would not close, very painful and trouble seeing. Ended up with an eye patch and my new WaterTribe name JR. Anyway boat did well, just alittle small at 12 foot. Plans are available.
So far the new AI is much improved in my judgement. Much less water to deal with and I have surfed downwind in 3 foot waves with a full expedition load (210 lbs) and although the front deck does get covered at times it comes right up so appears to have much more boyancy and I think it has at least 4" in height over the older model. It for sure carrys a heavier load.

JR Sounds like 2011was a rough one. Sorry you had to drop out. The puddle cat is very cool. It looks like a mini Lagoon Catamaran. Best boat on the beach that year from what I saw. Thanks for the info on the new AI. I was disapointed the race was canceled this year because I could not wait to hear how the new design handled. Glad to hear the changes made that big of a difference. How is that new seat treating you. Does it keep you comfortable while sailing for long periods? I may have to part with some old boats and add a new AI to the fleet.

SR, yep, so was 2012. Glad you like the PC. Lots of folks say it looks like a litle Lagoon.
I like the AI seat but when out for longs times, 12 hours or more, I do split my time between the new seat and a exped air mattress with seat adapter, just depends on conditions. I bungee the AI seat to the tramp when using the exped. The Air mattress collects rain so not so great there but it works out because I can sleep on it. I switch back to the hobbie when needed which drains water really well during rain or heavy wind and waves etc.

Thanks again for all the info on the new AI. The air mattress idea is great. Multiple uses out of one item helps a great deal.

Here are pics of my ongoing project . A 21 foot open cock pit double and a 20 foot single. Both have 16 foot ama's. My friend will begin work on sails in about 2 months. I am around 8 months into it.

Excuss my lewdness but... WOOF! Beautiful work! Its one of my goals to have a wood shop. Luckily I have a significant other who really wants to get her hands dirty making new furniture, boats and one day.... The trim for our house.... ;)

Here is the just launched row cruiser. Nicely done.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Thanks MB, I look forward to more pics of your project as it progresses. JR, that is an incredible boat, it looks like it moves well. How long did it take you to build it?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Sorry for the confusion NC....not me but I am tempted ....although there are things that I would change. Anyway it is Colin Angus of Angus Rowboat fame. He has been working on the design for several years and only just built a new one for a row sail. I am thinking that it would make a very good UF boat that you could take all the way without boat switching.
