picking up bear repelant tomorrow!
Adapting the old bear joke to kayaking, you don't have to paddle faster than the bear, you just have to paddle faster than the guy beside you.
Within the watertribe and the typical prevailing headwinds in the Neuse river, I might be in trouble!
Black bears hardly ever attack people but they're always interested in getting your food. Keeping your food in your kayak or boat is not a good idea, because they'll tear it up to get at it. What's your plan to protect your food and keep a bear from smellling it?
I plan to keep the food in a bear canister, and keep the canister away from where i sleep. Anyone have a better idea?
While transiting wilderness areas, if I sleep on shore, I normally raise the food in watertight bag all the way up to the top of my mast. Having the mast helps.

For those who have not done this challenge, it is a good idea to coat your deck with Crisco. When the bears tire, they try to climb on anything handy that floats.
Be sure to keep the Crisco off the bottom of your hull, it will agitate/excite the sharks.
BeastOarman,
Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten about that. I'll add some Crisco to my shopping list.
The good news is that you don't typically have to worry about both bears and sharks at the same time while underway. Lots of sharks about tends to keep the bears on shore and if the bears are swiming, it typically means there are no sharks around. Typically.
Jeff, unless of course you are in the alligator canal. I wonder if bear spray works on gators and sharks?
Wuddabout the snakes?
Even the lowly skeeters help to remind me that I am NOT at the top of the food chain!
